How to Create an Online Business When You’re a Super Chicken!

by bevbarnes on May 24, 2012

You’ve probably heard that to create an online business you have to have courage, confidence and clarity.  I don’t think that’s true.

I think that courage, confidence and clarity are the result of creating an online business not the pre-requisite.

I’m a super chicken, and I’ve created an online business.  I didn’t have courage, confidence or clarity when I started.

Suppose all that you feel is fear when you think about creating an online business, even when you know that you’ve found your passions?

Suppose that you’ve managed a ginormous budget and had huge responsibilities in your corporate job, but the thought of doing it for yourself keeps you awake at night?

You are not alone.

Breathe.

If I can do it, so can you.

I don’t like danger or anything that I perceive as danger.  In most of my pictures as a kid I was the one looking fearful.

It’s normal to be terrified, uncertain about whether you’re capable and totally fuzzy about your services.  If you wait until your fear goes away and you have crystal clarity, you’ll never start.

You have to do before you know.

You gain courage, confidence and clarity as a result of doing, not as a result of thinking about it, planning or getting positive reinforcement from someone else (even if it feels nice).

So what does it really take to start an online business when you are a super chicken?

1.  Be willing to be terrified (or at least accept that you will be).

If you’ve ever talked to anyone who’s done it, they have been totally freaked out, scared out of their wits on a pretty consistent basis.  Even people who you think are really successful and have thousands of online followers are feeling fear any time they step out of their comfort zone. Any time they come up with a new idea, any time they create something that they believe people need and send it out into the world….terror.

Here’s a secret.  Fear passes.  Once you are doing that thing you were so afraid of doing, your fear dissipates.  Fear exists before you get started, when you are thinking about doing it. It evaporates in the doing.

Furthermore, each time you do something new, it’s less fearful the next time because you’ve learned a little more about what works and what doesn’t.

2.  Find a soulfelt reason WHY.

Your soulfelt reason why, always involves adding more love to the planet and serving others.  You might not know how to do this yet, but you know why you are doing it.  Your “why” will help you to get clarity on “what” to offer.  As you keep creating services aligned with your soulfelt reason why, you will stumble upon something people need, that you want to offer.  That’s your soulfelt niche.  It will show up.  I promise.

Does your body sigh with joy and relief when you state your soulfelt reason WHY?

If it does, you’ve found your true calling. The only reason I have an online business is because it allows me to do my life’s work – helping people to re-create their work so that it satisfies their soul.  I started this business because it was the best way for me to make a living doing what I love – not because I saw myself as an entrepreneur.  When I state my reason why, my whole body sighs with joy and relief.

What’s your soulfelt reason WHY for starting an online business?

 3.  Tap into your Inner Warrior.

Fear is driven by your Inner Protector, the part of you that tries to keep you safe and make sure that you survive.  I bet you didn’t realize that you also have an Inner Warrior – the part of you that feels the fear but does it anyway!

Women aren’t really encouraged to connect to their Inner Warrior – but she’s still there, waiting for you to ask for her help.  She’s the part of you that forges new ground, plants her flag on new territory and doesn’t give up moving you towards your life’s work – no matter how hard or scary it is.

Think about famous women who have made a difference in the world.  Think about Beyonce or Lady Gaga. Can’t you feel their warrior nature?

You also have an Inner Warrior.  She’s waiting for you to claim her so that you can get on with doing what you were born to do!  I’ve created a new Playsheet to help you connect to your Inner Warrior.  Download it here.

Now quit thinking about what you want to do and how you are going to do it and GET GOING!

Dare to re-create your work so that it satisfies your soul!

Bev, I am grateful to have a little bit of you show up in my inbox on a regular basis. Thank you. This big chicken has a meeting with the grief coordinators at the Bereavement Centre here in Regina next week, and I’m choosing to step out of my comfort zone by taking on a leadership position with the Newcomers organization here as well. I’m moving out of the thinking, planning place that I’m very comfortable with and experimenting in the big wide world. And at times it’s freaking me out, other times it feels pretty cool. Thanks for the encouragement. 🙂

Bev – I LOVED this post! Super Chickens Unite!!!!! OMG – I am SUCH a chicken, but that hasn’t stopped me from slowly and sometimes laboriously inching along toward my dream of becoming a Life Coach. I have completed my training with Martha Beck and am soon-to-be-certified. Now my Super Chickeness has reared its head regarding setting up my coaching practice. So, I recently enrolled in Abigail Steidley and Susan Hyatt’s Coaching Evolution Revolution to get some help, encouragement, big cheers, and solid guidance on creating a thriving coaching practice. I’m terrified at pretty much every step of the way, but I’m still inching along. Oh, and I signed up for one of your Thursday sessions next week – can’t wait! This Super Chicken is happy to know there are others out there!
