Poetry for Your Life.

One of my clients shared a poem with me recently – a poem I’d heard before, but this time when I read it, it felt like I was hearing it for the first time.

It is such a powerful poem that I had to share it with you.

This poem speaks to the joy of being with your real self – and expresses what I see to be my purpose in life –  helping you to see yourself and your own beauty.

Love After Love

The time will come
when, with elation,
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,

and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

Oh, Bev, this is one of my favorite poems! I read this at the conclusion of Martha’s Joy Diet, while sitting on a crowded subway train in Tokyo, at burst into tears of joy! I had Martha sign it when I met her at our Meet & Greet, and now I have it framed. Thank you so much for sharing it, too!

I forgot it was in the Joy Diet! Yes – it inspires tears of joy. Thanks for sharing this Allison!

Bev, what a delight to open up my email and find you and this poem. I’d just read it yesterday in the back of Joy Diet and decided to use it in the sidebar for a flyer for a class I’m creating. What a joyful serendipity to receive it from you as well–the universe is talking — thank you for sharing.

That is what Oprah calls a “God wink”, a sign that you are on track Marte. It’s great to hear from you! xo
